Introduction
For two years the answer to "I have passive speakers and no amp" has been a WiiM. FiiO just put a different answer on the table, and it costs €269.
The AIR AMP is a streaming power amplifier: network player, DAC and Class D output stage in one 207 × 188 × 42 mm chassis that weighs 930 g. It is Roon Ready, it does AirPlay and QPlay, it reads a NAS share or a USB stick directly, and the included 48V/5A supply gets 120 W into 4 Ω or 90 W into 8 Ω out of a Texas Instruments TPA3255 stage. FiiO also runs post-filter feedback (PFFB) around that stage, taking the feedback loop after the output filter instead of before it, which keeps frequency response from wandering with speaker impedance.
Where it doesn't stretch: there is no HDMI ARC, which is exactly the thing every WiiM amp has, and no built-in phono stage. The headline 235 W figure in the spec sheet needs a 48V/10A supply that FiiO sells separately.

That last line is the whole decision in one sentence. If the amp is going under a television, WiiM still wins on HDMI. If it is going between a pair of bookshelves and a music library, FiiO has more DAC and more watts for the money.

Final Thoughts
FiiO has not tried to out-feature WiiM. It has built the version a hi-fi listener would draw: more DAC, more watts, a proper subwoofer output, and none of the television plumbing. At €269 that is a straightforward trade, and for a pair of bookshelf speakers and a music library it is the better half of it.
